Periodontology is an area of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the gums and supporting tissues of the tooth (bone and periodontium).

After caries as the most common disease of the tooth, the second most common problem faced by dentists in practice is periodontopathy, that is, a disease of the supporting tissues of the tooth.

Removal of hard and soft deposits

Dental plaque is a soft deposit on the teeth, and when it mineralizes, tartar is created, i.e. hard plaque on the teeth.

The removal of hard and soft dental plaque in the office is a painless procedure. First, the hard deposits on the teeth, i.e. tartar, are removed with the help of an ultrasonic device, above and below the gingiva, and specialized curettes are also used if necessary.

Soft deposits, i.e. dental plaque, are removed using a polishing paste. This procedure is done every 6 months, if necessary and earlier.

Bleeding of the gums – Gingivitis

Gingivitis, i.e. bleeding gums, is the first sign of inflammation of the supporting apparatus of the teeth.

Although poor oral hygiene, smoking and diet are listed as risk factors, periodontopathy also has genetic predispositions.

Gingivitis therapy includes ultrasonic cleaning of tartar, manual curettage of periodontal pockets and polishing to remove soft deposits, the ultimate goal of treatment is to prevent the progression of periodontopathy and prolong the life of teeth

Periodontitis – treatment

There are several treatments to treat periodontal tissue.

  1. Cleaning tartar and polishing soft deposits – a procedure that is done every 6 months, if necessary and earlier, to preserve the periodontal tissue.
  2. Surgical removal of a periodontal pocket in cases where it is the choice of therapy. With this surgical intervention, the depth of the periodontal pocket is reduced.
  3. Use of artificial bone, bone graft in a situation where the bone and periodontal tissue are severely damaged. An artificial bone is implanted which stimulates the creation of bone in the place where a large bone loss is localized.
